Baby Sleep Habits

Developing good sleep habits for your baby is vital to getting enough sleep. A sleep suit or sack won’t automatically make your baby a good sleeper, but it can definitely help.

To get the best results from a sleep tool like the sleep suit, try to incorporate the following healthy sleep habits for your baby:

  • Nightly Routine: Consider a bath, dimmed lights, a book – and try to consistently provide this routine to help your baby know it’s time for bed
  • Sound Machine
  • Appropriate Wake Windows and Bedtime: If your baby hasn’t been sleeping well, there’s a good chance they’ll have some sleep deprivation, which can make it even harder to get them to sleep. Do your best to put baby down for naps regularly and set a reasonable bed time.

What is Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit?

Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit is a zip on sleepsuit used to help your baby sleep better at night.

If you’ve seen pictures of baby’s looking like adorable fluffy marshmallows – there’s a good chance they’re wearing the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit.

It resembles a snowsuit or the Michelin man 🙂

How does Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit Work?

Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit was created by a pediatric physical therapist and a mom who, just like all of us, just wanted her baby to sleep better at night.

The Magic Sleepsuit works by suppressing your baby’s startle reflex, while simultaneously giving them a cozy and secure feeling.

So how does it do all that?

The fit of the suit hugs your baby’s arms, legs, and torso to give the feeling of being held and snuggled.

The material is also created slightly stiff (while still cozy), which helps your baby’s arms not flail while going to sleep. This is important because it can reduce the moro reflex (aka the startle) that can cause your baby to wake himself up at night.

If you’re working on transitioning out of the swaddle or trying to find a better way to help your baby rest, this can be a game changer.

Is Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit Safe to Use?

As long as you use the Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit correctly – it is safe to use. Be sure to use the safe sleep guidelines set out by the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  • Place baby on their backs for sleep
  • Place baby in their own sleep space with no other people
  • Use a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet
  • Avoid sleeping on a couch or armchair or in a seating device, like a swing or car safety seat (except while riding in the car)
  • Keep loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers, and other soft items out of the sleep space
  • Breastfeed if possible
  • Avoid smoking

Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit‘s website also recommends that “If your baby has any medical or developmental condition, please consult your physician before using our products or any other product in the crib.”

IMPORTANT: If your baby can roll over, he cannot use the magic sleepsuit any longer and it’s time to transition to a a different sleep sack, or none at all.

This is what happened with our daughter early on, and I was so disapointed that her time in the magic sleepsuit was cut short!

Can The Magic Sleepsuit Be Used for Naps?

Yes, the Magic Sleepsuit can be used for both naps and nighttime sleep.

Nap time is a great place to start practicing using the sleep suit if you’re nervous to dive right in.

How Big Does Baby Need to be to Use Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit?

In order to use Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit your baby should be able to appropriately fit in the 3-6 month sleepsuit and be showing signs that they’re ready for more freedom of movement.

Typically, this “freedom of movement” means they’re getting ready to transition out of the traditional swaddle.

The sleepsuit is made with a scooped neckline that provides baby with space below their neck for the swaddle to not move up over their mouth. If you baby isn’t quite big enough for the sleepsuit yet, they won’t fit appropriately and safely inside it.

Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit had a set of double zippers, making the suit easy to put on and give you longer stretches at night.

Can Baby Be Too Small for Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit?

Yes, your baby can be too small for Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit. If your baby doesn’t fit in the sleepsuit properly, they may be able to pull their legs up inside the suit and the scooped neckline may not lie flat.

If your baby is too small they also will not fit in the suit as snuggly and cozy as they should.

You baby is usually large enough for the sleepsuit when they’re wearing 3-6 month clothing.

Can Baby Be Too Young for Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit?

Yes, your baby can also be too young for the magic sleepsuit.

Developmentally, if your baby is younger than 3 months old, they may still need to be swaddled. The feel of the magic sleepsuit may not be right for them yet and you will not experience the “magic” of the sleepsuit.

Transitioning out of the Magic Sleepsuit

Once your baby can roll over IN the sleepsuit, or is getting close, it’s time to transition them out.

By this time your baby’s startle reflex starts to decrease and they won’t benefit as much from using Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit.

This is the part where many parents start to panic. You’ve become used the magic of the merlin suit and worry what will happen when you try to move baby out.

While changing baby’s routine is never easy, I don’t feel like the transition out of the sleepsuit is a reason to not use it.

Just as your baby transitioned out of the swaddle, they’ll transition out of the sleepsuit too and you’ll get back to a great sleep schedule.

I recommend transitioning to a wearable blanket after the sleepsuit and the Nested Bean one was our top choice.

I liked that it kept baby warm and still provided some comfort with the slight weight on the chest.

Should you buy a Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit?

In my opinion, yes!

If your baby is the right size and it’s developmentally appropriately I highly recommend giving Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit a try.

It was a life changer for our little guy who would never nap and did not sleep through the night.

We had tried SO many products and different methods to try and get our baby to sleep, but it felt like he was never getting adequate rest and a good night’s sleep.

After hearing about the merlin sleep suit, we knew we owed it to ourselves to at least give it a try – what did we have to lose?

The very first time we used it our baby took his longest nap ever, and the first night did not wake up in the middle of the night. This was HUGE for us.

We were a little skeptical, but the magic sleepsuit continued to work and we have continued to sing it’s praises since.

It took us from exhausted parents who could never set our baby down to sleep, to having no idea what to do with our “free time” during his naps.

When it comes to the sleep department this baby gear is a must have on my list and I recommend it to all my expecting friends.

FAQ

Can You Use Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit If Baby Rolls?

Baby’s typically begin to roll to their tummies between 4-6 months of age. If your baby is rolling over during floor play and in regular clothing (not in the sleepsuit), it is usually okay to continue using Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit.

Due to the structure of the sleep suit, it’s usually much more difficult for a baby to roll while in merlin’s sleepsuit.

However, once baby does start to roll or attempt to roll while IN the sleep suit, it is time to transition them out to a different wearable blanket or no sleep tool at all.

Will Baby Get Too Hot In Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit?

Many parents wonder if their baby will get too warm in the magic sleepsuit. As long as your baby is dressed appropriately, they should remain at a comfortable temperature.

A few tips to make sure baby’s temperature doesn’t get too hot in the magic merlin suit is to use appropriate layers and be sure the room temperature isn’t too hot.

The Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit site recommends that you have your baby wear just a diaper or a short sleeve onesie under the sleep suit – and not using more than one layer of light cotton.

Be sure to read this post on how to prevent diaper leaks overnight.

Use these tips to check baby’s temperature:

  • The recommended room temperature is between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Is the room comfortable for you? Do you live where it’s warm weather or cold? Your baby likely feels similar to the way you feel in the room!
  • Would you need a blanket in the room? If yes, your baby may benefit from a wearable blanket (no loose blankets in the crib!)
  • Does baby’s belly or back of the head feel sweaty or cold? This is a better place to check baby’s temperature as often baby’s hands and feet may feel cold to the touch, but baby is not actually cold.

How much does Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit cost?

Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit costs $39.95 and are sold at Target, Amazon, and the Magic Sleepsuit website.

How many Magic Sleep Suits Should I Have?

I recommend you start with one Magic Sleepsuit and see how things go.

If it works it’s magic on your baby and you both love it, then getting another is a great option for when you need to wash the sleep suit or for traveling.

Can You Use The Magic Sleepsuit Before 3 Months?

Most baby merlin’s magic sleepsuit reviews will warn you to not use the sleep suit on your baby before he or she is ready.

And mine is no different.

We were desperate to get started using the sleep suit in hopes that we’d all get better sleep, but it simply did not work it’s magic before my babies were 3 months old.

Infants really need to be developmentally ready and big enough to move from the swaddle to the sleep suit and see success.

So if you’re struggling and just want to try the suit early, I encourage you to wait until your baby is ready to really see the “magic”; otherwise, you may be disappointed.

What Size Does the Magic Sleep Suit Come In?

Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit can be purchased in 2 sizes. Sizes 3-6 months and 6-9 month size.

It’s important to remember that just because your baby can fit in the size does not mean they are in the correct developmental stage for the sleep suit.

If they’re too young/too small they may still require a swaddle blanket to keep them snuggly and if they’re too big/too old they may need a regular sleep sack.

Should I Buy the Microfleece or Cotton Version?

The Magic Sleepsuit comes in two types of fabrics: microfleece and cotton.

According to the Magic Sleepsuit site, both suits are made from the same inner layers and fill, but just have a different outer layer.

I have both, and do find that the fleece version is a little more cozy and fluffy as opposed to the cotton version.

In Minnesota I prefer the microfleece for my baby, but if you live in a warmer climate, I can see the appeal of the cotton sleep suit to keep baby’s body temperature a little cooler.
