If you’re a parent, you know the chaos that hits every single school night.

I’ve got three kids (two in school), and let me tell you—our evenings can get wild.

I do love using my Google Calendar to keep our family’s schedule in check, but do I ever remember which color is for who or what? Nope.

So don’t count on me to have some color-coded system that magically keeps everything perfect.

This year, I’m trying something new: a Night Before School Routine Checklist.

We haven’t actually used it yet (hello, new school year coming soon!), but I’m really excited to give it a try. My kids love a good checklist and feel so accomplished when they get to mark things off on their own.

I think it’s going to be a huge help for my husband and me too—no more constant reminding or last-minute stuffing snacks into bags ourselves.

I made this checklist simple, realistic, and totally doable. And because I know other parents could use the same sanity saver, I’m sharing it with you!

Why a Night Before School Routine Checklist Works

Here’s the thing. A few minutes of prep at night saves a whole lot of drama in the morning. The checklist does a couple of things:

  • cuts down on the last-minute “where’s my shoe?” meltdowns
  • teaches kids to take charge of their own stuff
  • makes mornings way less stressful

Honestly, it’s the little things that make mornings smoother—like actually knowing where the water bottle is.

This printable is super simple. It’s not overwhelming, it’s not covered in glittery cartoon characters (unless your kids add that themselves), and it gets the job done.

Here’s what’s on it:

  • Folders emptied
  • Clothes set out for tomorrow
  • Water bottle filled and in the bag
  • Snacks in the bag
  • Folders re-packed (homework?)
  • Hugged mom and dad

The printable even has space for two kids—one checks off in pink, the other in blue—because why print two if you don’t have to?

How We Use It

You can print a new one every week or, my personal favorite, make it reusable. Slip it into one of those clear paper protector sheets (you know the ones) or laminate it if you’re feeling fancy. Then just use a dry erase marker so the kids can check things off each night and wipe it clean for the next day.

It’s easy, and I know my kids are going to love the satisfaction of checking things off themselves.

Want to Add More?

If you’ve got older kids or you just want to tweak it, here are a few extras you could add:

  • 15 minutes of reading
  • Lunch packed and in the fridge
  • Winter gear ready (because boots magically disappear)
  • Shoes by the door
  • Devices charged (for those school iPads or Chromebooks)
  • Permission slips signed and back in folders

You can scribble these on the checklist or just remind your kids—it’s flexible.

Ready to Make Mornings Less Crazy?

This Night Before School Routine Checklist isn’t going to solve all the morning madness, but I think it’s going to help a lot. My kids will feel more prepared, and hopefully, I’ll feel a little less like I’m herding cats at 7 a.m.

Download the free checklist, slip it into a protector, and see if it makes your mornings just a little bit easier.
