My dad does this from time to time, and honestly… some of the stuff turns out to be genius.
These gifts are way off the traditional toy radar, but they’ve led to some of the most creative play and excitement in our house.

1. A Calculator That Prints
Not a cute kid calculator — I’m talking big, clunky, plug-in office-style with the paper roll – like this one. You’d think it was a cash register from the excitement. The sound of the printout, the little paper receipts, and the serious business vibe? Huge hit.
Bonus use: Playing “store” or “bank” for hours.
2. Flashlights or Headlamps
Not the bright-colored kid ones — just basic hardware store flashlights or headlamps. For some reason, having their own light source unlocks full adventure mode. My kids use them to explore the backyard, read under the covers, and turn off all the lights for “night missions.”

Mine will play “restaurant” for hours, taking orders from everyone (even the pets).
